The 102nd release of Thinner features Leif, an artist hailing from North Wales. In between working in a corporate day job, partying hard, drinking a lot of coffee, and chopping wood to keep his house warm, Leif runs UK based label Trimsound with his close friends Tom and Joe Ellis. Next to numerous releases on his own label, Leif has had releases on Morris Audio, Moon Harbour, Frankie, Telegraph, Logistic, Textone, Archipel and Floppy Funk.
He also DJs and performs live with Tom Ellis as “Trimsound Live”, bringing together live waves of sound using hardware sequencers, laptop and live bass guitar. We’re very proud to welcome this multitasking talent, who introduces himself to the Thinner people with The “Benrhos Dubs” EP, a cycle of three techhouse tracks, both pumping yet full of smooth dubs at the same time. Additionally the EP features a remix by thinner native T-Polar, who has an album upcoming.
Starting with the moody “Long Way Round” Leif offers a moody pumping techhouse track with smooth dubs, perfect to utilize in a progressing DJ set. “New Growth” is more of a laidback nature and suprises with an airy flute. The claps are emitted in wide hall rooms and percussive elements dribble on a carpet of gentle moody pads.
The third piece “The Tempo Of My Indicator” goes into a different direction, here the dry and quirky side of Leif is on his best behaviour, when he assembles sets of functional patterns by glueing frazzles of organs, vocals with a playful percussive potpourri. The cherry on the cake is the remix by T-Polar, who is grinding the original track in towards dark and humid canals, putting a massively saturated bassline, a yummy teaser for his next thinner longplay. Altogether, a box of diverse tracks, energetic and functional to spice up the night.

It’s been a far too long time since the release of Thinner?s 100th and with the downloads accumulating and the break getting longer and longer we tried hard in presenting a special release that promises to carry on the spirit of where THN100 has left.
It is with great delight that we may present Daniel Gardner a.k.a. Frivolous, who is a somewhat productive exile Canadian living in Berlin, accompanied by a chunky remix of Alland Byallo, whose recent string of diverse releases proves that 2008 is a huge year for him and his label Nightlight Music.
Besides more than 40 releases and over a dozen 12″s to his name, Daniel Gardner has toured the globe playing an eclectic array of venues and festivals along the way. The album on ~scape in 2007 was followed by another 12” in 2008, current Vinyl releases are available on Fenou and Minibar. His live shows have been hailed for their energy, originality and ingenuity as he’s taken the stage next to some of the most respected names in the business. Never compromising the art of showman-ship, these spectacles feature live keyboards and vocals as well as the incorporation of his DIY aesthetic.
Integrating homemade devices such as the “Frivolous Patented Electromagnetic knife”, the “Broken-Ruler Music Box” and the Double “Cable-Tub” Bass, his sets are injected with a sense of fantasy, imagination and personality scarcely found elsewhere in modern electronic dance music.
From Daniel’s perspective, “Under The Shower Tower”, is in first case an experiment in trying to do something compatible with what Daniel considers to be the “typical German format” - we get to hear a functional groover, which takes the listener on a seductive journey about the joy of body care appreciation, expressed by an incremental build up through acid-tinged modulations, lasviciously whispered voices and looped slices of electroacoustic instruments. And with the song progressing over eight minutes it is amazing to feel with what somnambulistic certainty Gardner manages to utilize violins as messengers of a detached euphoria, putting smile on everybodies faces.
Indeed it seemed to be successful since it’s getting praise from the big names, one of them supporters being Jeff Samuel, who summarizes the impact of Under A Shower Tower as follows: “This track rocks - I’ve played in every set since I received it. It’s worked every time, in big places, small places, indoors, outdoors, 3am, 9am, anywhere anytime. It’s very rare for something to work that well in so many different environments.” It is such testimonials which make Under The Shower Tower to become a keeper.
The virtual flip sees a remix by San Francisco’s most sought-after producer Alland Byallo, whose imprint Nightlight Music is growing quickly. His compact remix has the floor in sight, by keeping things earthy and gradually tweaking filters so the sunspots may break out of his synths. Enjoy!.

Obviously reaching the century mark in any endeavor is a milestone and is cause for celebration. In the case of netlabel thinner, it’s release number 100 and this calls for a compilation to celebrate this special occasion. And there’s another reason to celebrate - the compilation also marks the relaunch of the thinner netlabel. So here’s an opportunity to hear an aural digest of thinner’s past and present and to have a glimpse into it’s future. A most fitting way to bring this year to a close and serve as an impetus for the new year.
Simply titled “100″, the compilation brings together thirteen artists who exemplify the thinner sound. Many of the contributors are renown thinner artists and/or have strong associations with the label, and several artists have only recently made their first appearance on the thinner. Whether established or new, each of these artists does his part in epitomizing what thinner music is all about while, at the same time, etching themselves into the minds of the listeners as they dish out an assortment of top-notch electronic music embodying such genres as dub (and its many dub-inspired manifestations), minimal house, minimal techno, and unique fusions of dub, house, and techno. An assortment of ambiances are to be found here ranging from laidback lounge to dance-floor friendly.
Veer gets the album off to a modish start with some classic dub that includes spoken word and vocals. Calming things down with some slow-moving, bass-laden, atmospheres, daniel blomqvist presents his experimental take on the traditional dub sound. Tracks 3 - 6 show thinner’s more minimal techno side not only with contributions by veteran thinner artists unit 21 and benfay but also a collaboration between jason corder and pheek working together as social system and new face to the thinner roster, one daniel herrmann performing as trace, who dishes out some strong vocal-laden techno. Sensual physics sets the mood for tracks 7 - 11 which delve heavily into the minimal/deep house sound featuring well known artists brian kage, epsilonlab label founder eloi brunelle, and das kraftfuttermischwerk not to mention a track from the mysterious recent thinner newcomer laura palmer. As “100″ nears its conclusion, off the sky and gyges present a rather unclassifiable track of crunchy, laidback experimental environments before the album makes full circle and transitions back to the signature thinner sound of the beginning with a closing piece by deluge who has composed a beautiful track of organic dub accentuated with acoustic samples.
So celebrate along with thinner as it reaches a new landmark in it’s existence by downloading “100″ and immerse yourself in the thinner experience.

Ben Businovski makes his debut appearance on netlabel Thinner with a smooth, sensual techno release showcasing his own unique fusion of Detroit Techno and dub-inspired sounds. Influenced by the music of the Transmat (Detroit) and Basic Channel (Germany) labels, Ben modestly and succinctly characterizes the album as “just music to make people feel calm and relaxed”.
