Joe Ellis - Six of one, Half a dozen of the other (tfn002)

NetLabel: www.trimsound.co.uk
Link: TFN002
Style: minimal, minimal tech
Here we have Joe’s long awaited debut EP. Joe Ellis’ blend of deep house grooves and minimal tech are shining through on this release, with four tracks of quality laid back dance floor sounds.
The track “Wool” serves up a plate of glitch beats, seasoned with discordant keys and percussive cuts, while “Hero to Zero” sounds like a deep acid trip in a busy spanish cafe! Tom Ellis gives us his interpretation of the track “So Said” with the “Said So remix”.
The whole release carries a deep and minimal theme throughout, but you can definitely still hear Joe’s house roots showing through.

Royale - Positions Ep (rsc008)
NetLabel: www.ropeswingcities.com
Link: p=49
Style: techno, minimal tech
After a long break for summer time antics, we’re back with a new release of jackin techno from Royale, godfather like head man of Dope Recordings made to rock your dirty little mind.
After the long reign of minimal techno, micro-house, whatever you want to call it, we’ve been seeing the hard techno backlash slowly starting to rear its nasty little head, and with the Positions E.P. we have our own entry into the battlefield. All specially made tracks designed to make your body sweat during these long, hot nights on the dance floor, Royale is known for his ability to bring it proper, as the kids say, and these tunes are no exception.
The opening jam, Dog In A Bathtub, being the most subdued of the four tracks, still manages to want to push you around some and demand that you dance or go home. But after that, itÆs straight four to the floor madness. Blocking the Box, reminiscent of the late 90s Swedish techno sound brings it all up to the present with clean crisp production, hard hitting sounds and an undeniable groove for´yer rump. After that Game of Smiles shows up with some London style: relentless brain crushing percussion and kicks, triggering your kung-fu action grip, and causing you to throw your hands in the air.
Rounding out the release the Chocolate Cha-Cha brings us home in style, with housey underpinnings to help pull together this driving dance floor hump track.
So, as you can see, even though, we’ve been running around the woods in our underwear for the last couple of months, giving our friends little ôsurprisesö in their tents, its translated itself into a great new release on RSC, and a hot tracks way of getting back into the swing of things. And of course, enjoying the rest of our summer in style.

Audio Dependent - Teatime (1013ad)

NetLabel: www.after-dinner.net
Archive.org: 1013AD
Style: minimal tech, tech-house
Audio Dependent releases Teatime EP: Four tracks of highly addictive minimal- electro- progressive- techno…err… keep reading, let me explain:
“After Me”, the opening track progresses slowly with its highs and some glitchy sounds in unspectacular, if not random arrangement. With the major trance hands-in-the-air breakdown, the tune brings all the elements together, making a ironic point of its very own juxtaposition. After Me continuous from this point with a solid techno kick, building up the tune again, but this time we know…
“Biscuit”opens with crumbles of bass and kick, held together in a rolling composition. After about 90 sec a strong bassline gives this track the necessary ground, but leaving room for constant variations variations within mids and highs.
“Into”opens with melancholic folk-synth sound. Holding back for more than a minute, it feels great when the tune unlashes the tremendous energy of its bassline and kick. A big track for a late night dancefloor.
“Milk, One Sugar”, the final track brings all elements of Audio Dependents current release together: A minimal composition, with heavy bass, electro flavours, many sounds reminding of Korg’s MS20 and a constant evolution, entertaining brain as much as legs.

David last - What What (unfound021)

NetLabel: www.unfoundsoundrecords.com
Archive.org: unfound21
Style: minimal tech
Unfoundsound presents a six-track masterpiece courtesy of brooklyn’s david last — featuring three original numbers, plus three remixes by so inagawa (of the suffragettes), ditch and suz. On the whatwhat? ep, david last demonstrates his diverse music-making dexterity and crystal-clean production skills.
The ep commences with “animal hybrids” — a quirky, snippy dancefloor killer fueled by snarling found sounds and snappy percussion that all minimal techno djs can appreciate.
Then on “where it falls”, david last slows the bpm down to a chugging crawl — yielding a groovy, slow-paced dub tune meticulously doused with blips, bleeps and heady reverbs (somewhat reminiscent of monolake). This is followed by “sporty ankles” — a minimal masterwork that moves gently with broken beats, pretty vocal stabs, snippy percussion, drenching reverbs and a dubby undertone.
Then so inagawa reworks “where it falls” into a deep, sample-heavy minimal ass-shaker soaked with goofy found sounds and reverb-drenched timbres. Then ditch offers an upbeat remix of “sporty ankles” — a driving crowd-pleaser with a hard-hitting beat, gritty melodies and funny sound-sculpting.
And last but not least, suz offers another version of “where it falls” — a sexy and heady minimal house ditty doused with chopped up vocal snippets, a rumbling bassline, grainy textures and shuffly percussion.

Tokamak Red - Gls001 (gls001)
NetLabel: www.glam-slam.de
Archive.org: tokamak_red
Style: minimal tech, electro minimalista
“A tokamak is a toroidal (doughnut-shaped) magnetic plasma confinement device, the leading candidate for producing magnetic fusion energy. The term tokamak comes from the Russian words: “toroidalnaya”, “kamera”, and “magnitnaya”, which mean “toroidal, chamber, magnetic”. The last letter g was replaced by k to avoid analogy with the word magic. It was invented in the 1950s by Igor Yevgenyevich Tamm and Andrei Sakharov.”
“FUSION power offers the potential of an almost limitless source of energy for future generations but it also presents some formidable scientific and engineering challenges. It is called ‘fusion’ because it is based on fusing light nuclei such as hydrogen isotopes to release energy. The process is similar to that which powers the sun and other stars.”
One could wonder why someone should choose such a name. Well it is somehow both a political statement, as well as a good description of what the intentional sound and feel of this ep is, or should be. Somewhat subatomic, abstract but still full of energy. Yet some consider parts of this ep rather mad and irrational, so if you are under medication of any psychotropic kind i advice you: do not turn the lights out and do not look sixty seconds into the sun (neither i advice the use of the drill pointed at your head). For those kind of people who are boozed and/or smashed anyway: just dance on!.
(As a political statement ´tokamak´ stands for the urgency of a new world-wide energy policy. And YES i mean that.)

Blm - In The Cuntry Ep (leftnet003)
NetLabel: www.leftroom.com
Style: minimal, minimal tech
Finally we have the return of Leftnet. Now onto our third release we bring you Nottingham’s very own BLM. “In The Cuntry ep” is ridden with cheeky beats and rolling rhythms that will keep any dance floor bumpin. Available in the Leftnet section of www.leftroom.com.
First up is Bass Invader Aristocrat, a stripped down kick lead track, which has all the robotic influences needed. Next up is Alone, a 4 minute wonder of a track which has been doing the rounds at Leftroom HQ.
It is the perfect warm up record, where the bass and melody seem to slide together to create one warm sound. Dirty Faced Girl is the trippy pick of the bunch. Starts quite jackin, then slides out into a heady melody which will have u wondering what you are doing. The ep finishes off with Orange Juice, a laid back summer track which will have you smiling as the sun sets.
